Summary

The former earthworks of a series of Second World War slit trenches and/or aircraft obstacles forming a linear defence system are visible on aerial photographs to the west of the military camp at Weeting Hall (NHER 61476). The main component of the site is a system of linear arrangements of short rectangular trenches or weapons pits dug along the edges of agricultural strips or field boundaries. To the northeast of the linear trench system is an area of practice trenches and gun positions already levelled by 1945. These presumably relate to training activity earlier in the Second World War associated with the Weeting camp.

The former earthworks of a series of Second World War slit trenches forming a linear defence system are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S5) to the west of the military camp at Weeting Hall (NHER 61476). The main component of the site is a system of linear arrangements of short rectangular trenches or weapons pits dug along the edges of agricultural strips or field boundaries. Each short trench is accompanied by a mound of upcast material (not mapped). These trench systems are still extant in 1947 (S4), some sections survive partially intact until 1959 (S5). Similar lines of obstacles were dug on the nearby heath as part of a wider training area (NHER 61518).
To the northeast of the linear trench system is an area of practice trenches and gun positions already levelled by 1945 (S1). These presumably relate to training activity earlier in the Second World War associated with the Weeting camp.
