Full Description
March 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development area.
This survey revealed relatively few potentially archaeologically significant anomalies.
A single linear negative anomaly in the western field corresponds with a footpath shown on 19th- and 20th-century maps. Parallel cropmarks have previously been identified on the line of this feature, suggesting it was once a much more substantial road or trackway (NHER 38695). A single linear positive anomaly also corresponds with a post-medieval feature, in this case a former field boundary marked on the Happisburgh Tithe map. A number of strong, discrete positive anomalies in the northern part of the survey area may represent pit-like features, although they are difficult to interpret due to their dispersed nature. Many of the remaining anomalies detected are thought to be the result of either agricultural practices or changes in the background geology. A number of discrete and area bipolar responses most likely indicate the present of modern debris in the soil.
