Summary

In 2013 an archaeological evaluation of this site was undertaken ahead of proposed aggregate extraction. An initial field walking and metal-detecting survey failed to identify any notable concentrations of material (see NHER 22673 for details). The results of subsequent trial trenching were similarly negative, with only a small number of ditches identified, none of which produced any dating evidence. There was no trace of the single linear cropmark feature previously identified in this area (NHER 49690).

Map

November 2013. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed extension to Norton Subcourse Quarry (Extraction Phases 11-13).
The 39 trenches excavated revealed little in the way of archaeologically significant remains. A number of ditches were recorded in the north-eastern part of the site, none of which produced any dating evidence. Samples taken from the fills of these features proved to be sterile. A linear feature interpreted as the remains of a hedgeline was also identified in this part of the site. No features were identified in the western field and there was no trace of the single linear cropmark feature previously identified in this area (NHER 49690).
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
