Full Description
June 2013. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed route of new sludge transfer pipeline.
The northernmost of the two trenches excavated in this field was positioned to coincide with the known line of a post-medieval sea bank (NHER 27057). Prior to the excavation of the trench the bank was only just perceptible, its top lying at 2.17m OD. Hand augering suggested that the total depth of bank material was approximately 0.9m. Most of the deposits exposed were thought to be been part of the bank. A possible exception was a silt deposit that was present beneath layers considered to be bank material. This deposit overlay another silt which had the appearance of a flood deposit and which produced a single medieval pottery sherd of probable 12th- or 13th-century date.
The southern trench revealed no archaeologically significant features or deposits. Removal of the soil layers exposed a pale blue silt with orange flecks that was regarded as a natural deposit.
