June 2015. Desk-based Assessment and Trial Trenching.
Assessment and evaluation of proposed development site.
Until recently this block of land had been used as a farm stack yard. Research suggests that the site had been pasture until the mid 19th century, when it was fenced and presumably changed use. The only structure known to have existed on the site is one that that was present during the mid to late 20th century.

The three trenches excavated revealed a small number of archaeologically significant features, the earliest of which was a probable medieval pit that produced several pottery sherds of 12th- to 14th-century date. A sample taken from this feature produced a small amount of material consistent with domestic waste, including cereal grains, fish and amphibian bones and seeds.
The other features included a small post-medieval pit, two probable post-medieval quarry pits, two modern post-holes and an undated possible post-hole.
Due to the recent use of the site as a farm stack yard the upper deposits in all three trenches were extremely compacted.
