Summary

A trial trench excavated at this site in 2015 revealed the robbed out remains of what had probably been a substantial north-to-south aligned wall and a possible clay post pad. Both are likely to have been associated with medieval monastic structures. This area appeared to been significantly disturbed during the post-medieval period, with no medieval floor surfaces surviving.

Map

August 2015. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of site of proposed new building.
The single trench excavated revealed a substantial north-to-south aligned wall robber trench and a small clay pad that may have supported a post. Both are likely to have been associated with medieval structures. No medieval floor surfaces were observed and the presence of 18th- to 19th-century brick and tile fragments at the base of the subsoil provides further evidence for extensive post-medieval disturbance in this part of the site.
Two small test pits excavated against the southern wall of the adjacent stables revealed the brick foundations of this post-medieval building. There was no indication that this structure had been built on earlier footings.
See report (S1) for further details.
