Summary

A trial trench evaluation at the site in 2015 revealed a potentially post-medieval pit and a linear feature of probable natural origin. Made ground deposits were noted in all trenches and there was evidence that the site had seen at least a degree of truncation.

Map

May 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
All three of the trenches excavated revealed deep deposits of made ground. It is likely that the site had also been truncated at some point in the past as intact topsoil and subsoil deposits were only noted at the end of one trench. Metal-detecting during the excavation of the trenches also produced an abundance of modern metalwork.
The only feature of note was a shallow pit that produced two post-medieval pottery sherds. A linear feature that was noted in two of the trenches was thought to be a former water channel.
