Full Description
May-September 2014.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with the Great Ellingham sewerage scheme. The monitored excavations included trial holes, drill pits, lateral connections and a single length of open-cut trench, all of which were dug along the line of the road itself.
Only a single archaeologically significant feature was observed – a shallow post-medieval pits identified during the excavation of one of the drill pits (NHER 61941).
In many locations tarmac and hardcore deposits lay directly above the natural geology, suggesting the construction of the modern road had resulted in at least a degree of truncation to the underlying deposits. The least-disturbed area appeared to be the northernmost section of Chequers Lane.
See report (S1) for further details.
