NHER 61946 (Negative evidence record) - Site with no evidence for archaeologically significant remains

May-September 2014.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with the Great Ellingham sewerage scheme. Works monitored on Attleborough Road included the excavation of four drill pits and a trial hole.
No archaeologically significant features or deposits were identified and it was noted that tarmac and hardcore deposits were particularly deep along this street. In some places this material lay directly above the natural geology, suggesting the construction of the modern road had resulted in at least a degree of truncation to the underlying deposits. This was however not true of the whole road, with a surviving subsoil deposit noted in a drill pit excavated to the east of St James' Church.
The single drill pit excavated near Church Farm had a particularly high archaeological potential due to the previous discovery of numerous inhumation burials immediately to the south. It was observed that here a thick bedding layer of crushed concrete was present beneath the tarmac, lying above disturbed natural deposits. It is therefore highly likely that any burials that were present at this location were disturbed and probably totally removed during the construction of the road.
