Summary

A watching brief maintained during groundworks at this site between late 2014 and early 2015 recorded little in the way of archaeologically significant remains. An undated shallow pit and two late post-medieval or early modern wells were the only features identified. The small number of finds recovered were all of post-medieval or modern date.

Map

October 2014-January 2015. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with the construction of new buildings and the installation of associated services.
The stripping of a large area on the site of a new south wing revealed a single, shallow sub-circular pit. No finds were recovered from this unremarkable feature. It should be noted that natural geological deposits were not fully exposed so conditions were not conducive to the identification of archaeological remains. No further remains were identified during the subsequent excavation of footing trenches for the south wing.
Two late 19th century or early 20th century wells were exposed by the footing trenches excavated for the new east wing. The footing trenches excavated for an extension to the west of the extant building revealed no remains of note.
The excavation of a rain water soakaway and trenches for mains water and electricity services also revealed no archaeologically significant remains. Finds were limited to fragments of late post-medieval/modern ceramic building material and modern pottery.
Although soil arisings from these works were subject to metal-detecting no metal objects of note were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
