Summary

The earthworks and vegetation marks of possible platforms and small ditched enclosures of uncertain date and archaeological significance have been identified on aerial photographs. These possible features on the edge of Hockwold Heath broadly coincide with the location of Roman building material (NHER 39316), suggesting the presence of a possible Roman building in this area. It is therefore feasible that these earthworks relate to former Roman settlement evidence visible on the heath in the 1940s. See NHER 5587 to the south which has similar, but more extensive evidence.

Earthworks and vegetation marks of possible platforms and small ditched enclosures of uncertain date and archaeological significance have been identified on aerial photographs (S1-S2). These possible features on the edge of Hockwold Heath broadly coincide with the location of Roman building material (NHER 39316), suggesting the presence of a possible Roman building in this area. It is therefore feasible that these earthworks relate to former Roman settlement evidence visible on the heath in the 1940s (see NHER 5587 to the south which has similar, but more extensive evidence). Although it must be noted that medieval to post-medieval material was also recovered. This area of heath was used extensively in the Second World War (NHER 61518) (S3), so it must be borne in mind that the possible earthworks and vegetation marks could relate to military activity and/or earlier extractive activity.
