Summary

A large area of earthworks relating to extraction and possibly mining remains, probably of largely post-medieval date has been identified on aerial photographs and the 1m resolution lidar data. It seems likely that the earthworks relate to several extractive activities, including sand and gravel. However evidence of probable post-medieval and/or modern gun flint mining has been identified to the north (NHER 54544) and it is possible that some of this more complicated area of extraction may also relate to the removal of gun flint.

Map

A large area of earthworks relating to extraction and possibly mining remains, probably of largely post-medieval date has been identified on aerial photographs (S1-S3) and the 1m resolution lidar data (S4). The site is largely outside of the current project area and has consequently not been mapped or analysed in any detail. A series of braided trackways are also visible, some may relate to the movement of extracted material, as well as more historic routes across the common.
