Summary

The former village school at Bressingham was constructed in the mid-19th century. It consists of a single room with tarred clay lump walls, a pantile roof, a plain boarded door in the west gable-end and three windows with lapped glazing. The windows represent a rare, vernacular form of glazing primarily used as an affordable way to light workshops and their survival within this former school building is exceptional. The building now forms part of a private dwelling.

Map

March 2017. Field Observation.
The former village school at Bressingham is of a single room with tarred clay lump walls, a pantile roof, a plain boarded door in the west gable-end and three windows with lapped glazing. One set of modern glazed French windows. The original windows are of a type rarely seen in present days and were normally used for cheap lighting of workshops. They consist here of sashes with vertical glazing bars and small panes or quarries fitted into the rebates lapping over each other. The old mid-19th century school is exceptional in having a full set of this truly vernacular form of glazing.
