Summary

Vegetation marks visible on aerial photographs 1.3km to the east of the Neolithic flint mines at Grimes Graves (NHER 5640) could represent additional areas of contemporary mining. Their interpretation as archaeological features is uncertain, however, and they could equally reflect underlying geological features.

Map

April 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
Vegetation marks visible on aerial photographs (S1), 1.3km to the east of the Neolithic flint mines at Grimes Graves (NHER 5640), could represent additional areas of contemporary mining. Their interpretation as archaeological features is uncertain, however, and they could equally reflect underlying geological features. The features have been mapped by extent.
Small extraction pits shown in the area surrounding the site on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S2) could have a similarly early origin, although there is no further evidence to support this suggestion. They have not been mapped by the project and are not included within the site.
