Summary

Geophysical survey and trial trenching in 2003 and 2005 examined the Roman road (NHER 2796) as well as a rectangular enclosure and a series of north-south linear features identified from cropmarks in 1996 (see NHER 36729). The trenches established the location of the Roman road and that the linear features pre-date it. No conculsive dating evidence for the linear features or enclosure was recovered but a small collection of undiagnostic prehistoric worked flint was recovered.

2003. Excavations by NAHRG.
Three trenches were excavated in order to locate features associated with cropmarks of a Roman road (NHER 2796) and a series of linear ditches (NHER 36729). Sections of the Roman road were excavated in Trenches 1 and 3. The only archaeological feature encountered in Trench 2, intended to locate one of the linear features, was the edge of the northern ditch of the Roman road.
Information from reports (S1) and (S2). The results of this work are also summarised in (S3).
Finds recovered from Area A consisted of a collection of undiagnostic late prehistoric worked flint. See Finds Recording Sheet (S5).
See also NHER 39449 for the results of fieldwalking and metal-detecting that took place in tandem with the excavations.

2003-2005 (at some time). Geophysical Survey.
A resistivity survey was carried out in Area A (see S2) in order to locate the set of five linear ditches and the Roman road previously identified as cropmarks in aerial photos. Resistivity was also planned to locate cropmarks in Area B, in order to locate the rectangular enclosure, but ground conditions were not suitable.
Information from reports (S1) and (S2).
H. Hamilton (NLA), 13 March 2008.

2005. Excavations by NAHRG.
Further work was undertaken in Area A. Trench 4 located one of the linear features. Three sections of the features were excavated, and the intersection of the Roman road was located in the south of the trench. This work confirmed that the linear feature pre-dates the road, although no dating evidence was collected from any of the sections excavated along the ditch. A single trench was excavated in Area B in order to locate the rectilinear enclosure and linear features in the east of the field. Part of the enclosure ditch was located, although it is believed that the junction of the enclosure with the ditch is located 10m south of the trench. No dating evidence was recovered from excavated sections of the ditch. Finds in Area A were limited to a small quantity of residual Roman and post-medieval pottery sherds, while Area B yielded a small quantity of undiagnostic flint implements.
Information from reports (S1) and (S2). The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
