Summary

There buildings were original two separate units - Nos 137 and 139 Magdalen Street. The two-storey building that was formerly No 137 dates to the 17th-century and is associated with a two-storey jettied rear range. No 139 is a three-storey brick building of 18th-century date. Both buildings are associated with 19th-century shopfronts. Listed Grade II. Nos 137 and 139 were acquired by the Norwich Preservation Trust in the late 1990s after having lain empty and in a stage of disrepair for some time. The subsequently initiated programme of repair and renovation saw a number of changes to the arrangement of the buildings, which became five residential units and two commercial units.

139 Magdalen Street and 1-3 Hartley's Court, formerly 137 and 139 Magdalen Street.

1972. Listed, Grade II.
Listing Descriptions Excerpt:
"No 137: Former use unknown now shop. 17th century. Rendered first floor. Pantile roof. Two storeys. Two bays. 19th-century glazed shopfront with recessed side door. Yard entry to right. 18th-century sash windows at first floor with glazing bars.
Rear wing:- Two storeys, jetty at first floor. Three casement windows."

1998-2000.
Towards the end of the 20th-century Nos 137-141 Magdalen Street were vacant and in a state of disrepair. As a result they were purchased by the City Council and transferred to the Norwich Preservation Trust, who then initiated a programme of restoration and renovation. This resulted in the creation of five residential units and two commercial units. The yard to the rear was christened Hartley's Court, after Eric Hartley, a long-serving chairman of the trust.
