Summary

These two former houses were surveyed in 1968, prior to being demolished shortly afterwards. The earlier of the two appear to have been 86A which was a two-storey building of possible 17th-century date. A timber frame with brick infilling was observed behind its brick walls. At some point, perhaps during the 19th century, it had been converted to a bakehouse. No 86 to the north was a three-storey brick building of probable late 18th-century or early 19th-century date. Both buildings were in a poor condition at the time of the survey.

Map

Site of Nos 86 and 86A Pitt Street.

April 1968. Building Survey.
Survey probably undertaken as part of work by University of East Anglia (UEA).
No 86 was a three-storey brick house of probable late 18th-century or early 19th-century date, converted to a shop. It had a slate and tile roof.
No 86A was a two storey house that had been converted into a bakehouse, perhaps during the 19th-century. Its lack of symmetry suggested it may have been a 17th-century building. Although its wall were brick and area of damage on the west side of the first floor revealed part of a timber frame with brick infilling.
Both buildings were in poor condition at the time of the survey and maps suggest that they were probably demolished fairly soon afterwards.
See record forms (S1) for further details, photographs and measured floor plan.
