This building is amongst those noted in thesis (S2), which considers the 13th- to 17th-century buildings of Norwich (listed as No 23 Bedford Street/1 Bridewell Alley). It is described as probably having had 16th- or 17th century origins but will very little dating evidence having survived fire damage and its use as a shop. The fire occurred in 1978, when both this and the adjacent building (No 25 Bedford Street) were badly damaged.
Due to a confusion about the older street numbering this information was previously wrongly added to the record for 2 Bridewell Alley (NHER 26269).
