Full Description
OS field 93.
1960s-70s. Fieldwalking finds.
Prehistoric flint scrapers, core, retouched flakes. Also 2 ?Mesolithic blades. ?Prehistoric, Roman, Middle Saxon, medieval, post medieval pottery sherds. Undated slag.
1962 to 1968.
Trial trenches were opened when an area of ash and burnt bone and part of the base of an urn and sherds were recovered. In 1963 an area some 9m by 4m was excavated and a spread of clay, bone and ash was noted. At least three circular hollows filled with clay and charcoal were discovered, along with some pottery sherds. These were interpreted as cremations. In 1964 another urn was discovered during ploughing. It had been placed in a small pit, and contained burnt bone and a second small vessel. In 1968 further excavation recovered a sparse area of charcoal and bone, possibly a pit. Pottery sherds and at least one whole urn were also recovered. A ditch seen to run through the excavated area was also investigated by another excavator, and found to be the ditch of an enclosure, outside which these cremations lay.
