Summary

A 17th century barn once stood at Street Farm. A visit in 1975 showed it to be a skeleton structure which had been partly dismantled. Surprisingly the wood was still in fairly good condition but it was still proposed for demolition. It was granted a reprieve from this demolition but was subsequently blown down in gales during 1976! The timbers that were left have been incorporated into the adjacent Street Farmhouse (NHER 40401).

Map

18 December 1975. Barn at Street Farm seen by E. Rose (NAU).
Now a skeleton structure, partly dismantled. Central section has two storeys, lower about 2.1m (7ft) high, upper to rafters. Low one-storey sections at each end. Roof of tiebeams, now covered with corrugated iron. The wood is in surprisingly good condition - some beetle and several splits, but little rot - has it been replaced at some time? Possible date for building 16th century - it has been suggested that it was originally a hall-house brought from elsewhere, but I am not at all happy with this idea. To the north is a smaller one-storey barn of similar construction, with ruins of a timber porch to the north.
Application to demolish in December 1975 - farmer plans to use wood to repair farmhouse.
E. Rose 18 December 1975.

Reprieved but blown down in gale 8 January 1976.

Survey by RCHME suggests a 17th century date, with ground floor used as storage and upper floor for sleeping or workrooms. Says west bay is contemporary but that east bay is an 18th century addition. Claims original door was in west gable wall.
1981 - other barn to be converted to house.
E. Rose (NAU).

May 2004.
Timbers from the collapsed building were seen in the adjacent Street Farmhouse (NHER 40401). They appear to be of comparatively late date, late 17th or 18th century, which would fit the dates assigned by the RCHME. Other timbers are said to have been reused in a local public house. The building, since its demolition, has acquired the story of having been a guildhall, which is quite impossible. The barn to the north, listed as 17th century, is now converted to a house.
E. Rose (NLA) 11 May 2004.

The converted barn to north, now known as Old Threshing Barn, is shown in (S3) in file.
E. Rose (NLA), 2 March 2007.
