Summary

A watching brief maintained during groundworks at this site between 2013 and 2017 revealed a single ditch and several pits. The ditch was parallel to the nearby Langham Road and was probable associated with a boundary of medieval or early post-medieval date. Two of the pits were poorly dated but potentially medieval whilst the third was probably associated with a later, post-medieval phase of activity. The ditch was also truncated by a smaller undated feature with evidence for in-situ burning. Residual and unstratified finds of note recovered during this work included a Bronze Age flint scraper and a Roman pottery sherd.

Map

July 2013-September 2017. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new residential dwelling.
The footprint of the new building exposed a north-to-south aligned ditch and two discrete features. The ditch produced a small assemblage of what were probably mostly residual finds including prehistoric worked flints, a highly abraded Roman pottery sherd and a single medieval sherd. The alignment of this feature suggests that it was most likely associated with a boundary of medieval or early post-medieval date. The fill of the ditch was truncated by an undated possible hearth with evidence for in-situ burning and a dark charcoal-rich fill. The second discrete feature was a larger pit that produced a single sherd of medieval pottery.
A pit of similar character was revealed during the subsequent excavation of several service trenches, although this feature produced no dating evidence. One of the service trenches also exposed a pit of post-medieval date.
Unstratified finds recovered during this work include a flint scraper of probable Bronze Age date, a post-medieval button and a single sherd of post-medieval/modern pottery.
