Summary

A watching brief maintained during groundworks at this site between 2008 and 2011 recorded the iron frame of an abandoned boat. An inscribed plaque indicated that the boat had a capacity of "86 persons" and it is possible that it was originally a lifeboat for a commercial vessel.

Civil Parish POTTER HEIGHAM, NORTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

September 2008-September 2011. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks undertaken as part of Broadland Flood Alleviation Project (Compartment 6).
Strimming of the undergrowth at this location revealed the iron frame of a boat. This boat was approximately 10m with a pointed prow and rounded stem. A single fragment of wood attached to the frame was inscribed "86 persons". It is therefore possible that it was originally built as a lifeboat for a commercial vessel, perhaps later used as river pleasure craft.
See report (S1) for further details.
