Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2017 revealed a small pit-like feature that produced a single sherd of prehistoric pottery. The only other features of note were an adjacent, undated possible pit of similar size and an undated ditch. The largely negative results of this work confirm that the cemetery of the adjacent church (NHER 7749) never extended into this area.

Map

September 2017. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site to south of All Saints’ Church.
The seven trenches excavated revealed relatively little in the way of archaeologically significant remains. Of greatest interest was a shallow, circular, pit-like feature with a dark charcoal-rich fill that produced a single sherd of undiagnostic Late Prehistoric pottery. This possible pit lay close to another feature of similar shape and size, although this had an unremarkable fill and produced no finds. Other features identified included a large hollow of uncertain nature, an undated probable ditch and an irregular linear feature of possible natural origin.
Unstratified finds were limited to a piece of dense slag-like material and a fragment of post-medieval agricultural machinery.
See report (S1) for further details.
