Full Description
September 2016. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of possible development area (Area A).
This survey identified no potentially archaeologically significant anomalies.
A linear anomaly detected at the southern edge of the field was probably either associated with a recent track or, more likely, an artefact from processing the data. The majority of the anomalies recorded were ferrous spike likely to represent recent debris in the plough soil.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 February 2018.
January 2017. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site of proposed new road and associated infrastructure (Trenches 25-32).
The eight trenches excavated in this field revealed only three archaeologically significant features; a ditch, a pit and a post-hole, none of which produced any dating evidence.
The north-east to south-west aligned ditch is likely to have been a continuation of similarly-aligned cropmarks features mapped immediately to the west (NHER 51920). Although these cropmarks were interpreted as possibly part of a double-ditched enclosure the presence of only one ditch suggests that this is incorrect. It was suggested that the pale, sterile nature of the ditch’s fill may indicate a prehistoric date.
The pit had a thick black, charcoal-rich primary fill but no other evidence for its function.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 February 2018.
January 2017. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of engineering trial pits in proposed development area (Trial Pits 23-26).
No archaeologically significant features or deposits observed.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 February 2018.
An archive presumed to comprise material from both phases of work in 2017 has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2019.244).
P. Watkins (HES), 9 December 2022.
