Summary

A dispersed group of earthworks and soilmarks of routeways and boundaries of probable medieval to post-medieval date are visible on aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery. The main routeway continues to the south into an area of features recorded under NHER 29701. Some sections of this route are depicted on the 1839 Tithe map, however the southern section in particular is no longer in use. Additional possible earthworks were visible on the aerial photographs and lidar but were not mapped due to an uncertain archaeological origin.

Map

February 2018. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
A dispersed group of earthworks and soilmarks of routeways and boundaries of probable medieval to post-medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S5) and Environment Agency lidar imagery (S6). The main routeway continues to the south into an area of features recorded under NHER 29701. The split between the two sites is fairly arbitrary, especially to the north of Peppers Close. Some sections of this route are depicted on the 1839 Tithe map (S7), however the southern section in particular is no longer in use. Two areas of braided tracks have been defined by extent of area polygons. The eastern area of tracks is likely to be associated further areas of trackways recorded under NHER 61537. A possible square platform was identified on the historic aerial photographs, although the archaeological significance was uncertain and it may relate to post medieval or even modern activities within the plantation. The feature was not particularly clear on the Environment Agency lidar (S6). Additional possible earthworks were visible on the aerial photographs and lidar but were not mapped due to an uncertain archaeological origin.
