Summary

The earthworks of a mound of uncertain date and archaeological significance, which could feasibly relate to a prehistoric or Saxon barrow, and a trackway and/or boundary of potential post-medieval date or earlier date, are visible on the 2m resolution Environment Agency lidar data. While both features may be earlier and of archaeological significance, it is possible that the track and also the mound could relate to one of the phases of extraction and spoil in this area, with a chalk and lime pits depicted on all the historic maps.

Map

February 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The earthworks of a mound of uncertain date and archaeological significance, which could feasibly relate to a prehistoric or Saxon barrow, and a trackway and/or boundary of potentially at least post-medieval date, are visible on the 2m resolution Environment Agency lidar data (S1).
The lidar reveals a slightly oval mound, approximately 25m by 20m, which could feasibly relate to a Neolithic or Bronze Age round barrow. Numerous barrows have been recorded within this area. Although note the nearby presence of a possible early Anglo Saxon cemetery (NHER 19576), which could also suggest a Saxon date for the mound.
The line of the track and/or boundary is broadly similar to the edge of the woodland as depicted on the Tithe map (S2) suggesting that it may date to this period or was at least recognised as a boundary in this period. It is possible that the track and also the mound could relate to one of the phases of extraction and spoil in this area, with a chalk and lime pits depicted on all the historic maps.
The site would benefit from investigation on the ground to further understand the date and significance of the earthworks.
