Summary

A geophysical survey of this area in 2012/2013 identified a linear anomaly that corresponds with an extensive cropmark feature (NHER 52112). Two perpendicular anomalies were also identified that may represent contemporary field boundaries. Subsequent trial trenching undertaken in 2015 saw the excavation of the ditch associated with the cropmark feature, although its date remains uncertain as finds were limited to a small number of Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flints. It should though be noted that the excavation of presumably contemporary parallel and perpendicular ditches in the field to the south (NHER 62623) also produced only worked flints, at least raising the possibility that these features were associated with an early field system. Only one of the other geophysical anomalies was found to correspond with a sub-surface feature and this was potentially natural in origin. The only other feature of note revealed in this field was an undated pit or three-throw hollow with an ashy fill. A geophysical survey of the south-west corner of this site in 2018 identified no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies.

Map

April 2012-April 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Block 47).
This survey identified a faint east-north-east to west-south-west aligned linear anomaly at the southern end of the field that clearly corresponds with a previously identified linear cropmark (NHER 52112). Two short perpendicular anomalies were also identified that appeared to extend to the north and south of the main feature. It is though likely that the three anomalies represent contemporary anomalies associated with a field system of unknown date.
Although a range of other anomalies were identified these are not thought to be of archaeological significance, being most likely of agricultural or geological origin.
See report (S2) for further details.

April-May 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of area on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Route (Field G10).
The nine trenches excavated in this field revealed only a small number of archaeologically-significant features.
A east-north-east to west-south-west aligned ditch identified at the southern end of the field corresponded with a linear cropmark (NHER 52112). Finds were limited to a small assemblage of Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flints and several burnt flints. A linear feature identified in an adjacent trench corresponded with one of the two linear geophysical anomalies that were perpendicular to the main ditch and were presumed to represent contemporary field boundaries. The nature of the excavated feature was however not entirely certain, being recorded as potentially periglacial in origin. The only other feature of note was an undated sub-circular pit
Unstratified finds included a Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint blade, a number of later prehistoric worked flints and a single medieval pottery sherd.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 April 2018.

August 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development area (Area 3). The four other areas examined as part of this survey (Areas 1-2 and 4-5) all lay to the west of this field and are recorded under NHER 64659.
No potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies were identified at this location.
Two negative linear anomalies are both thought to represent drainage features.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.
