Map

A mid-19th century brick magazine or powder magazine used to store explosives and munitions for the local Swaffham Militia.
The structure measures approximately 2.5m square and has cavity walls, a steel door and a now collapsed, pyramidal timber and slate roof. Evidence suggests that that interior was timber lined and had ventilation vents. One brick on the exterior has the inscription "G.W.L.C. 1916" on it and one wall is pockmarked with bullet holes, probably from target practice.
The building is visible on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map (1879-1886) (S2) and the Hamond Estate sale details (early 1900s) (S1) as a structure in the south-east corner of a square enclosure. It has been suggested that this square area may have been a parade ground.
Information from Email (S1), Map (S2), Newspaper Article (S3) and Photograph (S4).
An example very similar in date and style to this structure is recorded in Dereham (see NHER 22305).
