Late 1960's - Early 1970's. Casual Observation.
In 2018, the observation of a Roman mosaic was reported to the Historic Environment Service [1].
The remains were found by the local blacksmith "about 50 years ago" while installing an iron fence and gate. Whilst digging a post hole for the gate, he encountered a tiled surface at a depth of approximatley 3m. This was described as a mosaic and is believed to be of Roman date. It appeared that the mosiac continued southwards, so the post hole was back-filled and the gate was moved 5-6 feet north. No further remains were observed in the new location.
Also reported at the time was the observation of a brick culvert to the northeast of this site (NHER 62942). This culvert was constructed of long, thin bricks and appeared to continue in the direction of the mosaic. It's possible that these remains are related.
For further details, see sketch plan (S1).
