Map

May-June 2012. Walkover Survey.
Archaeological Earthwork Rapid Identification Survey of The Stews (Compartment 2b).
Two near-rectangular former fish ponds with associated leats and channels were identified at TF 8848 4401 (Site 6), both of which measure approximately 25m by 15m. It is currently unclear whether these predate the adjacent lake. The features are two of the three fish ponds depicted at this location on the Holkam Tithe map of 1839 (S1).
An adjacent part water-filled former watercourse was also recorded (Site 5) that either represents an earlier leat from the lake or a former natural watercourse.
See report (S2) for further details.
