Summary

A Rapid Identification Survey undertaken in 2012 identified a well-defined earthwork bank adjacent to extant track that is known to have been present since at least the late 19th-century. It is suggested that the bank may have been associated with a much older enclosure.

Map

May-June 2012. Walkover Survey.
Archaeological Earthwork Rapid Identification Survey within Old Common Plantation (Compartment 9).
A well-defined north-to-south aligned bank, up to 0.4m high and up to 3m wide was identified between TF 9020 4147 and TF 9022 4165 (Site 21). This feature lies adjacent and parallel to a trackway that appears to have been present since at least the late 19th century. It is suggested that the bank may have been associated with an early enclosure on the common, the shape of which is now fossilised in the position of park boundaries.
See report (S1) for further details.
