Full Description
April-August 2011. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of flood defence works undertaken along the bank of the River Bure as part of the Broadland Flood Alleviation Project (Compartment 9).
A number of finds were recovered during topsoil stripping in this field, including 20 post-medieval/modern pottery sherds and a post-medieval roofing slate. Although these objects are themselves unremarkable their presence in the marshes is unusual. They are probably the result of this land having been manured with material that incorporated household refuse.
During the subsequent excavation of a new drainage dyke a single piece of wood was observed by the machine driver at a depth of approximately 2m. This was not retained and was not seen by the monitoring archaeologist.
See report (S1) for further details.
