Map

October 1999. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site (Trenches 1-14).
The 14 trenches excavated at this location revealed several probable ditches and a number of possible pits, the majority of which produced little or no dating evidence. The exceptions included a possible ditch and two pit-like features exposed in a single trench in the eastern part of the site, all of which produced small amounts of medieval pottery. Another pit was also found to contain broken glass bottle and pottery of 19th- and early 20th-century date.
An extensive dump of 19th-century or later brick rubble was exposed in the south-east corner of the site.
Unstratified finds included a small assemblage of Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flints; Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; post-medieval ceramic building material; clay tobacco pipe fragments and a number of iron objects.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
