Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2017 and 2018 identified a number of potentially archaeologically-significant features but little evidence for activity prior to the late post-medieval period. A geophysical survey undertaken in 2017 revealed no clear evidence for archaeologically significant remains. Although a number of anomalies were identified, these were all regarded as being of probable natural origin. Subsequent trial trenching exposed ditches and a pit of probable post-medieval to modern date, as well as several undated curvilinear gullies. It is possible that the gullies were circular features associated with 19th-century hay ricks or stack stands.

Map

September 2017. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site.
This survey identified no anomalies of definite archaeological significance. Responses of an uncertain nature included a small rectilinear anomaly and a few linear trends - all of which are regarded as most likely of natural origin. Wavy bands visible in the data are thought to have been caused by naturally magnetic soils associated with former tidal flood deposits.
The eastern part of the survey area was magnetically disturbed due to modern debris.
See report (S1) for further details.

November 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The ten trenches excavated revealed a number of features, although these were mostly of probable post-medieval or modern date.
Two perpendicular ditches that ran parallel to extant boundaries were almost certainly post-medieval features, although neither appears to correspond with boundaries marked on the available 19th-century maps. The line of the north-east to south-west aligned ditch could still be seen as a shallow earthwork depression running across the site. This feature was found to contain various objects of probable 19th date suggesting both features had probably been infilled around this time.
Several curvilinear gullies were also thought to have been of relatively recent date, although they produced no finds. These were possibly circular gullies associated with 19th-century hay ricks or stack stands.
Other features included a large pit in the north-east corner of the site that contained modern pottery sherds
