Summary

A bank (partially double), of unknown but probable post medieval date, is visible as an earthwork on visualised lidar data. It corresponds with a narrow plantation – and at its northern end with a field boundary – depicted on 19th century maps, but it is not clear whether it was a boundary to the plantation, or the plantation was established on top of the bank. It also partially corresponds with part of the eastern limit of Methwold Warren (NHER 55577), and may therefore also have functioned as a medieval to post medieval warren bank. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2015), it is probable that the earthwork still survives.

Map

April 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
An undated earthwork bank is seen on visualised lidar data (S1). The bank is aligned approximately north west - south east and most likely is a continuation of the bank to the south east (located at TL 7701 9297). The bank is most likely post medieval in date and may relate to a boundary mapped on the Tithe, First and Second edition Ordnance Survey maps (S2-S4). The bank probably survives as a low earthwork and may have been damaged by ploughing in the past, as the bank is lower on the visualised lidar data than the sections of bank in the forestry plantation to the south east. The bank is in close relation to further possible boundary banks to the north (NHER 63267) and to the east (NHER 63269).

August 2020. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The undated bank described above continues further to the southeast, visible as an earthwork on visualised lidar data (S1). As suggested above, it corresponds with a field boundary (at its northern end) and plantation depicted on 19th century maps, including the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S3). It is not clear whether it was a boundary to the plantation, or the plantation was established on top of the bank. The bank also partially corresponds with part of the eastern limit of Methwold Warren (NHER 55577), and may therefore also have functioned as a medieval to post medieval warren bank. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2015), it is probable that the earthwork still survives.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 11 August 2020.
