Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2008 and 2010 recorded little in the way of significant remains. Trial trenching in 2008 exposed only a single undated ditch and although a geophysical survey undertaken the same year identified a number of potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies it appears none were particularly convincing. A watching brief maintained during subsequent groundworks in 2009/2010 also had negative results with no additional remains observed and no finds recovered.

Map

September-November 2008. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection cable (Trenches 61-67).
An east-to-west aligned ditch was the only potentially archaeologically-significant feature identified in the seven trenches excavated at this site. This feature was encountered in the northernmost trench and although no finds were recovered the fact that its alignment is similar to that of nearby extanct field boundaries suggests that it most likely medieval or post-medieval in date [1].
A subsoil layer present in all of the trenches was seen as evidence for medieval open-field agriculture at this location.

September-November 2008. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection cable (Areas 11 and 12).
This survey identified a number of potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies in the northern half of the field although it appears that none were particularly convincing.
Report awaited. Information from (S2).
P. Watkins (HES), 8 June 2019.

2009-2010. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping and other groundworks associated with installation of the Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection cable.
No additional archaeologically-significant remains identified and no finds recovered.
Final report awaited. See assessment report (S2) for further details. This work is also noted in (S3).
