Full Description
3 Red Lion Street.
Included in Norwich City Local List and described as follows:
Early 20th century. Three-storey former pub with carriage arch to left. Red brick and plain tiles. Four bays (right-hand bay to two storey). Casement window under arched heads with stone details and string courses. Two-storey oriel window with leaded roof.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 June 2019.
As detailed in (S1) there are records of a licence associated with the site dating back to at least 1822. The earlier building was completely demolished and rebuilt by Morgans Brewery in 1900.
It is recorded in (S2) that the 'Coach and Horses' in Norwich once contained a three-dimensional bas relief panel made by the well-known Norwich artist John Moray-Smith at some point during the mid 20th century. This depicted a coach and horses and was one of a series of commissions for Morgans Brewery. Unfortunately its present location is unknown. Although it is not made clear in (S2) exactly which of the three Norwich public houses named the 'Coach and Horses' actually contained this panel it was presumably this one on Red Lion Street - given that it is the only one shown by (S1) to have been owned by Morgans at the time in question.
See (S2) for further information on this and Moray-Smith's other works in Norwich and beyond.
