Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2008 and 2010 identified ten ditches, at least some of which presumably correspond with the cropmarks previously recorded at this location (NHER 21848). These features were all revealed during trial trenching in 2008 and were mostly of uncertain date, although their varied alignments suggests that several phases of past activity were represented. The small number of finds recovered and the limited available stratigraphic evidence suggest some were probably of medieval to post-medieval date. A geophysical survey undertaken around the same time also identified a number of probable ditches but it appears a watching brief maintained during subsequent groundworks in 2009/2010 recorded no additional remains.

Map

September-November 2008. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection cable (Trenches 116 and 117).
The northernmost of the two trenches excavated at this location revealed four ditches that were of uncertain date, although their varying alignments suggests they probably represented more than one phase of activity. It was also noted that they appeared to cut a subsoil layer that was seen as a probable produced of medieval open-field agriculture.
The southern trench exposed a further five ditches, all of which were aligned roughly east-to-west. One of these feature produced a medieval/post-medieval pottery sherd and another a post-medieval brick.
Unstratified finds were limited to a single prehistoric flint end scraper.
It is likely that at least some of the ditches exposed during this work corresponded with the cropmarks previously recorded at this location (originally recorded under NHER 21848 but now part of a group documented under NHER 65768).
See reports (S1) and (S2) for further details. This work is also noted in (S3).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.361).
Previously recorded under NHER 51469.

September-November 2008. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection cable (Area 9).
This survey identified linear anomalies likely to represent a series of north-east to south-west and south-east to north-west aligned ditches.
Report awaited. Information from (S2). This work is also noted in (S3).
P. Watkins (HES), 14 June 2019.

2009-2010. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping and other groundworks associated with installation of the Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection cable.
It appears that no additional remains were observed during this phase of work.
Final report awaited. See assessment report (S2) for further details. This work is also noted in (S3).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.361).
Previously recorded under NHER 51469.
