NHER 63480 (Monument) - Site of Gaywood tannery

This is the site of the Gaywood tannery, as depicted on the Gaywood Tithe Map of 1838 (S1). The site included a sluice, tan yards and cottages. The tannery was known as Saunders' Tanyard as the owner in 1838 until his death in 1873 was John Gower Saunders. A sluice visible on the Tithe Map (S1) and on the first edition Ordnance Survey map (S2) bringing water from the Gaywood River to the north presumably enabled management of the water supply to the tannery. A certificate dated 1882 and noted in file for NHER 32980 (Ship Inn) describes the site at that date as including tan pits, a bark mill, barn, yard and other buildings.
