Summary

A group of probable 20th century military practice trenches is visible as earthworks on lidar imagery. They could be of Second World War date but others identified in the vicinity (NHER 63337, 900m to the southeast) have been interpreted as being of pre-Second World War date. They may therefore be of First World War date, or could relate to military training taking place in Breckland before 1914, or in the inter-war period. Several other similar trenches have been recorded to the east (NHER 57837) and west (for example NHER 62024). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2015) it is probable that the earthworks still survive. It is possible, however, that they were once more extensive. They lie within a rectangular enclosure (NHER 61508), which is of probable post medieval date, and was probably a pre-existing feature of the landscape when the practice trenches were constructed.
