Summary

This is the site of a demolished building which stood on the corner of Chapel Street and Ravenshaw's Yard. It was one room deep and two storeys high, with an attic. It is likely that this building was timber framed and it may date to as early as the 16th century. It was demolished in the late 1960s or early 1970s and this area is now part of Chapel Street car park.

Map

This is the site of the now demolished 43-45 Chapel Street. The building may have been as early as 16th century and is likely to have been timber framed. Photographs show it as of two storeys and attic, with a steeply pitched pantile roof and a large central chimney. The south gable wall is of brick. A possible plat-band running horizontally between the ground and first floors may be a piece of surviving timber frame or a later decorative feature. The fact that this building was Listed in 1951 supports the suggestion that this building was timber framed or at least of an early date.
It is possible that this is the building to which (S2) described as similar to the timber-framed street frontage of Lattice House (NHER 12005) as (erroneously described as 41-43 Chapel Street) since these buildings were one room deep and two storeys high. If this is the case it is possible that they may also have been shops on the ground floor with a stair or ladder at the rear providing access to the upper storey (as at St James' Street (NHER 17905)).
The date of demolition is unclear. (S1) suggests this was sometime after 1972, but if this is the building to which (S2) refers, it has already been demolished before (S2) was published in 1971. The adjoining building (NHER 63528) was demolished in 1967.
