A bomb or impact crater dating from the Second World War is visible as an earthwork (since levelled) on aerial photographs taken 1945 and 1946 (S1-S2). The cause of the crater is not known. It could relate to the crash site of a Lancaster bomber, for which the locational information is conflicting, but which may have occurred in this approximate area (NHER 33637). If this was the case, however, a larger, less circular crater might have been expected, together with greater evidence of disturbance and damage in the surrounding area. Although more recent aerial sources indicate that the crater is now largely levelled, visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2015 (S3) shows that a shallow depression may still survive.
