Summary

World War One memorial in the form of a freestanding stone statue depicting the seated figure of a mourning woman. This memorial was erected to commemorate twelve members of the local community who lost their lives in World War One. The memorial was Listed Grade II in October 2017.

Description:
The memorial is in the form of a freestanding stone statue, depicting the seated figure of a mourning woman. It is used to commemorate twelve members of the local community who lost their lives in World War One. The morning woman figure is described “with a shawl covering her head and shoulders, holding a wreath and leaning against a jagged piece of rock”. This is situated on a “four-stepped base, which surmounts a square pedestal with moulded cornice that is supported by pilasters to each corner. The pilasters have chamfered stops and stand on a narrow block foot that is chamfered along the top edge except at the corners. The whole surmounts a two-tiered plinth atop a narrow, square stone base” (S1). On the pedestal there is an inscription on the south face with names listed on the east and west faces, all in leaded lettering.
