Summary

A probable 20th century military practice trench is visible as an earthwork on visualised lidar data and 1940s aerial photographs. It could be of Second World War date but like others identified in the vicinity (NHER 62024, 400m to the north, for example) they appear more likely to be of pre-Second World War date. It may therefore be of First World War date, or could relate to military training taking place in Breckland before 1914, or in the inter-war period. Several other similar trenches have been recorded to the east (NHER 63337, 57837 and 63338) and north (NHER 63339). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2015) it is probable that the earthworks still survive.

A probable 20th century military practice trench is visible as an earthwork on visualised lidar data (S1) and 1940s aerial photographs (S2-S3). It could be of Second World War date but like other, similar trenches identified in the vicinity, the site was partially under woodland cover by the mid-1940s and it seems more likely to be of pre-Second World War date. It may therefore be of First World War date, or could relate to military training taking place in Breckland before 1914, or in the inter-war period. Several other similar trenches have been recorded to the east (NHER 63337, 57837 and 63338) and north (NHER 62024, 63339). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2015) it is probable that the earthworks still survive.
