Summary

World War One memorial in the form of a freestanding obelisk comprising stone, flint, and bronze. This memorial was erected to commemorate twelve members of the local community who lost their lives in World War One. A historic photograph indicates that the memorial was being constructed in 1919, but the date of the unveiling is currently unknown. Following grant funding from War Memorials Trust the memorial was restored in 2016. The memorial was Listed Grade II in November 2017.

Location: Junction of Langley Green, Langley Street and Staithe Road, Langley with Hardley.
Type: Obelisk
Description:
The memorial comprises stone, flint, and bronze, in the form of a freestanding obelisk. It is used to commemorate twelve members of the local community who lost their lives in World War one. It has been described as “constructed from rough-coursed flint with ashlar quoins; crowned by a slim, bronze, Latin cross finial. The obelisk rises from a square plinth comprised of coursed, roughly-dressed stone with inset ashlar panels” (S1). On the ashlar panels, there is an inscription on the north-east face, in incised lettering. With names, along with regiment, particulars surrounding death, and date, also incised on the remaining faces. “Above each panel is a square, ashlar stone with motifs carved in relief” (S1). This comprises, a wreath on the north-east face, Fusilier Marksman regimental badge on the south-east face, Norfolk Regiment badge on the south-west face, and a Royal Artillery regimental badge on the north-west face. The whole surmounts a two-stepped base.
