Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from limestone in the form of a freestanding, canopied, floriated cross-head. This memorial was unveiled in 1920 to commemorate seventeen members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly nine men who died in World War Two. It was refurbished in 2014 with grant aid from the Norfolk Armed Forces Community Covenant Board and King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council. The memorial was Listed Grade II in March 2018.

Location: The churchyard, St Mary's Church, Church Road, North Creake.
Type: Floriated Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from limestone, in the form of a freestanding, canopied, floriated cross-head. It is used to commemorate seventeen members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly nine men who died in World War Two. It is described as “rising from the moulded collar of a tall octagonal shaft. The shaft stands on a plinth, square on plan, with a broad single-stepped base below” (S1). There are inscriptions on the plinth in incised lettering. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) is to the front face, with associated names to either side of the plinth. The latter World War Two dedication and associated names (Inscription B) are to the rear face.

Inscription A: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ WHO GAVE THE VICTORY/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE UP THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918/ THIS CROSS IS ERECTED 1920.
Inscription B: ALSO IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO DIED/ IN THE WAR 1939 - 1945/ (NAMES).
