Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from granite in the form of a freestanding, rock-faced, Latin cross. This memorial was erected in 1919 to commemorate seven local servicemen who died in World War One, along with an additional serviceman who drowned when on leave; and latterly three local servicemen who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in April 2018.

Location: St Nicholas Churchyard, Church Lane, Potter Heigham.
Type: Latin Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from granite, in the form of a freestanding, rock-faced, Latin cross. It is used to commemorate seven local servicemen who died in World War One, along with an additional serviceman who drowned when on leave; and latterly three local servicemen who died in World War Two. It is described as “standing on a trapezoidal plinth. This has polished surfaces on three of its four sides for leaded inscriptions. A single-step base supports the plinth, and the whole structure stands on a concrete foundation” (S1). There are inscriptions and names on the plinth in leaded lettering. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) is to the east face, and continues the same side to the base below (Inscription B) (S5). The World War One dates (Inscription C) along with the associated seven names is to the south face, followed by the eighth additional name and cause of death (Inscription D). The latter World War Two dedication (Inscription E) along with the three associated names is to the north face.

Inscription A: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ THE GIVER OF VICTORY/ THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED A.D.1919/ IN SACRED MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ AND WHOSE NAMES ARE HEREON INSCRIBED/ AND IN HONOUR OF/ ALL WHO SERVED IN THE FORCES/ ON LAND OR SEA.
Inscription B: THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE/ ECCLUS 44.14 (S5).
Inscription C: 1914 – 1918.
Inscription D: ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED/ WHEN ON LEAVE.
Inscription E: 1939 – 1945/ WORLD WAR.
