World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: Churchyard of the Holy Trinity Church, Church Plain, Loddon.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn, wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate twenty-eight local people who died in World War One, and latterly sixteen who died in World War Two. It is described as “with Sword of Sacrifice in relief on the face, atop a curved plinth, which stands on a three-tiered granite base with a stone base below” (S1). There are inscriptions in leaded lettering. The former World War One dedication (Inscription A) is to a roundel on the shaft and continues (Inscription B) to the plinth face, with twenty-eight associated names listed in two columns below. The latter World War Two dedication is to a stone plaque set into the granite steps, along with sixteen associated names (Inscription C) listed in two columns (S4).
