Summary

Earthworks of ridge and furrow of medieval date were identified in woodland during a site visit in 1969. Subsequent consultation of aerial sources (aerial photographs and lidar) could not identify these features. Much of the area instead appears to be occupied by a former extraction pit, which presumably pre-dates the woodland.

September 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The earthworks of medieval ridge and furrow described above were not identified on the consulted sources. A large extraction pit (not mapped) is instead visible on the visualised lidar data (S1). This presumably pre-dates the woodland being established. It is not clear whether the ridge and furrow earthworks have been levelled, are unrecognisable on the consulted sources, or were mis-located or misinterpreted in the original record.
