Summary

A medieval moat. Medieval pottery sherds have been found inside the earthwork, the earliest of which are late 11th century in date. Subsequent metal-detecting between 2006 and 2020 has recovered Iron Age, Roman, Early/Middle Saxon, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; Late Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval tokens; a post-medieval jetton and a range of other, Bronze Age to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a Late Bronze Age chisel; an Iron Age/Roman terret; a Roman brooch and lead steelyard weight; an Early Saxon girdle hanger; Middle Saxon tweezers; a Middle/Late Saxon strap end; a Late Saxon/medieval unidentified copper alloy implement; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval ?furniture mount, lead pot mends and lead spindle whorls; a medieval/post-medieval terminal from scale-tanged knife, copper alloy vessel fragments, copper alloy 'paper clip' rivet and writing lead and post-medieval clapper bell fragments, furniture fittings, a book clasp, pin, crotal bell, purse bar, end cap from scale-tang knife, crucifix figurine, lead powder charge cap and lead cloth seal.

2 Post-medieval pottery sherds, 1 button and 1 crucifix figurine.

1 Iron Age coin.
1 Roman coin, 1 pottery sherd (Greyware) and 1 brooch (dolphin).
1 Early- Middle Saxon pottery sherd (reduced with dark purplish margins).
4 Middle Saxon pottery sherds (pimply Ipswich) and 1 tweezer arm.
1 Late Saxon pottery sherd (?Grimston thetford).
5 medieval coins, 11 pottery sherds (6 unglazed, 5 Grimston; 2 ?unglazed, 3 glazed), 1 finger ring fragment, 1 buckle plate, 1 buckle frame fragment, 1?strap end fragment, 1 double looped belt fitting, 2 lead spindle whorls and 2 strap ends (1 composite, 1 shield shaped).
1 medieval/post-medieval scale-tanged knife terminal scale, 1 'paper clip' rivet.
4 post-medieval coins, 3 double-looped buckle frames, 2 buttons, 1 hooked book clasp, 2 clapper bell fragments, 1 lead powder charger cap, 1 scale-tang knife end cap (form of a Fleur-de-lis) and 1 furniture fitting.
1 undatable lead weight.
